San Francisco Conference Provides High Quality Program

More than 450 informatics nurses and allied professionals convened for the ANIA 2016 Annual Conference on April 21-23, 2016, at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco in San Francisco, CA.

Participants included nurses, educators, administrators, researchers, and other health care professionals whose careers intersect with IT. They attended sessions by the top experts in the informatics industry, earned continuing education credits, and networked with colleagues. Attendees also visited with vendors in the exhibit hall and enjoyed special events.

"From the quality of the speakers to the networking, this was hands down one of the best conferences we've ever had," said Daniel Gracie, DNP, RN-BC, new ANIA President. "It's rewarding to know the nurses got so much out of it."

AHRQ Awards Grant to Engage Stakeholders in Use of Clinical Decision Support

A new learning network grant from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) will explore with stakeholders how patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR) findings can be incorporated into clinical practice through health IT-enabled clinical decision support (CDS). Patient-centered outcomes — defined as the results of medical care that are important to patients — can give patients and providers the power to make more informed health decisions. This network will bring together multiple public and private stakeholders and monitor and measure the dissemination and use of PCOR findings in vendor-based and open source CDS tools.

Using Mobile Apps to Improve Patient Care

As nurses juggle to carefully attend to patients while also accurately updating electronic health records (EHRs), providers seek an alternative to "extra hands." Some health care organizations are now relying on digital apps on mobile devices to pick up the slack. By using apps to record patient data while making rounds, nurses are provided the opportunity to focus on care in the moment and update files at a later time.

"Our world is a digital world, advancing from one technological breakthrough to another," says Jason J. Fratzke, RN, MSN, chief nursing informatics officer for Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. "In nursing, this means that nursing informatics has to remain the solid bridge between nurses and the technology associated with improving patient care. The mobile nursing apps are only one aspect of technology that can help elevate nursing practice to new heights."

Some of these apps are hands-free with the use of voice recognition technology, and they can also be used for barcode medication administration and message delivery. (Source: Nursing Notes, April 12, 2016)
