Partnership for Health IT Patient Safety Releases White Paper Outlining Recommendations for Safer Opioid Prescribing

The ECRI Institute, in collaboration with the Electronic Health Record Association, through the Partnership for Health IT Patient Safety — a national collaborative that includes ANIA — recently brought together health information technology (IT) developers and other safety professionals to examine how technology can contribute to safer opioid prescribing. Their findings are highlighted in a white paper entitled “Safe Practice Recommendations for Safer Opioid Prescribing: Measures and Clinical Decision Support.” The paper details the cycle of performance measurement and clinical decision support that can be incorporated into the electronic health record (EHR) to enable safer opioid prescribing practices. An accompanying implementation guide provides strategies to:

  • Enable technologies to measure and monitor prescribing patterns
  • Ensure that EHRs can collect and access the data needed to support measures and drive clinical decision support (CDS)
  • Ensure that opioid-prescribing CDS interventions are delivered appropriately in the workflow for both opioid-naive and opioid-exposed patients
